About Me

Hi! I'm Cathy Saputo (she/her)

I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. I opened the doors to Saputo Counseling Services in January, 2016. Education, credentials, and experience are an important part of selecting a therapist. So, I tell more about that below. What is probably more important is whether you feel I'm the "right" therapist for you. Most clients want to know "What are you really like? How do you approach therapy? Will you be a good fit for me?" Here are a few things about my style:

I am an interactive therapist. This means, I will listen and hear your concerns, but I will also challenge you to think differently, try new behaviors, and consider ideas that may push you outside of your comfort zone. I will engage you and ask you to do some hard work. Most clients appreciate that I do not sit quietly through our sessions staring at them.

I am a sex positive therapist who believes that talking about sex will change the world (a nod to one of my mentors, Dr. Sallie Foley). It's important to me that I provide a safe space free of judgment, shame or guilt. Consent always matters here. I have always been and will always be an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist and human who believes you have the right to your bodily autonomy.

I combine psychoeducation and talk therapy. I'll strive to provide current research and factual information to you about your concerns. I'll likely recommend you do some of your own research through reading, watching videos, or exploring other content. When appropriate, I'll use humor, candid feedback, and straight forward conversation when talking about sex or anything you want to address. I utilize the biopsychosocial model (biological, psychological and sociological aspects) to addresses the whole health of a person during therapy.

I've completed literally thousands of hours of training to earn the privilege of working with my clients. Some of the therapeutic tools I use regularly are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Informed Therapy, Parts Work, Strengths and Values Based Therapy, Gottman Method, Pain Reprocessing Therapy, and Mindfulness. I attend multiple training events every year to gather the latest research to continuously update my skills.

I am passionate about helping you to reach your therapy goals. I want to hear from you when something is not working. I value your feedback and view therapy as a collaborative process.

Personal Statement

I humbly acknowledge the privilege I have as a white, cisgender, mostly straight, woman. I make it a point to learn and understand other's experiences and the impact of systemic racism and ongoing political policies and actions that harm Black persons, People of Color and LGBTQIA+ persons. I oppose discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion or spiritual practices. I believe that gender and sexuality are fluid and that each person has the right to sexual freedom and pleasure inclusive of ongoing, willful consent. I actively work to be non-harming whether at work or in my personal life. My learning is ongoing.
